BELGIAN AEROBIOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE NETWORK

The Belgian pollen and spore monitoring network was created in 1974. Its main objective is to give rapid information about these allergens to practitioners, pharmaceutical companies and allergic sufferers. These data will help determine a diagnosis and the eviction of high risk periods.

Last update:  24/05/2013

Pollen concentrations are hampered because of the bad weather conditions. No grass pollen grains were collected in Brussels on Thursday.

Hay fever sufferers have to be cautious. In case of dry weather, pollen densities could be moderate and induce allergy symptoms in highly sensitized people.

Useful information:

- At the beginning of the grass pollen season, a few grains may induce allergy symptoms in highly sensitized sufferers.

-Individual sensitivity may vary a lot. It is reported in literature that from 50 grass pollen grains per m³, all sufferers sensitized to this type of pollen will experience allergy symptoms.

-Horse chestnut trees are in bloom. Allergies to this pollen type are occasional, mainly among individuals living near these trees.
